Spinning Dangerously Week 2

Have been working on ideas for B&W.

Flirted with the idea of not doing marle but actually trying to reproduce the yarn used in the original for the Jacket  a very slubby wool/linen blend. But I only had a bit of hemp for the sample. I made a batt from white and black tops fed in side by side, I removed the batt to add a little hemp and then recarded. Trying very hard to minimise creating grey. I spun thick and thin singles then knitted swatch (approx 9-10wpi). The result was too much grey and the singles were not thick enough for the jacket project, but I loved the effect and will keep it in mind for something else. There are no pictures of the preparation, but here is the swatch and a closer view of detail. Mostly garter (which I love) with a few rows of stocking stitch. On with the marle which I will need to cable ply to get it thick enough. And just to add some colour - I finally wound the pink merino/silk into balls.

Week two also saw me winding balls from recently finished skeins, combing and spinning more and more Black and White, and doing a little bit of spindling. I also continued with my pink scarf, but have noticed a horrible mistake - about 10" ago, somehow I reversed the pattern so what was once the back is now the front. I am NOT frogging, so I will wear it as is.

Spinning randomly

Randomly spinning small quantities of tops then Navaho plying them to maintain the colour separations has created a beret with circles. The pattern by Diane Mulholland is freely available on Ravelry and can be used with all types of yarns because it is based on a swatch. It was knitted in the round starting at the brim and working inwards. Approx 12 wpi.

Great Beanie Picnic

This lovely soft yarn from a EGMTK batt was sold at the Great Beanie Picnic held on 20th February for the exhibition of the Alice Springs Beanie Festival Travelling Show . The lady who bought it has at least one beanie in the show - she wasn't sure if she would use it for Art Beanie or for herself. either way it has gone to a good home. Most people seemed to be poking around looking for a bargain, and as any spinner knows fine blends don't come cheap! Still we had a good afternoon and I was able to demonstrate/teach a few younger people to drop spindle and showed them how to make a CD spindle of their very own.
